한국의 다학제적 큐레이토리얼 리서치 플랫폼 ‘드리프팅 커리큘럼’과 캐나다의 연구 창작 집단인 ‘카운터 메모리 액티비즘’의 협업 프로젝트로 진행된 <증인으로서의 자연>은 인간-비인간 세계가 어떻게 교차하여 ‘숨겨져 있거나 지워진 공공 기억’의 흔적을 활성화하는지에 관한 것이다. 한국과 캐나다의 역사적 갈등, 기억, 생태적 재난 등의 트라우마를 치유하는 수단으로써 ‘대항적 기억(counter-memorialization)’ 과정을 탐구하는 이 협업 프로젝트는 공동 리서치, 워크숍, 창작, 레지던시, 전시 등의 활동이 중심이 된다. 첫 번째 공동 프로젝트로 광주 호랑가시나무에서 진행되는 이 전시는 상호 간의 지역 연구를 통해 인류세, 지구 환경 위기, 과거와 미래의 생태 재앙이 어떻게 지도화되고 기념되는 것인지 탐구하며, 자연이 어떻게 과거의 비극에 대한 증인이 될 수 있는지 살핀다. 또한 자본주의 폭력과 환경 재앙, 식민지 구조에 의해 자신들의 역사가 인정받지 못했던 사람들을 위한 대항적 내러티브를 구축해 지배적인 지도제작 관행에 도전한다.

A collaborative project between the Korean multidisciplinary curatorial research platform ‘Drifting Curriculum’ and the Canadian research and creative collective ‘Counter Memory Activism’, Nature as Witness is about how the human and non-human worlds intersect to activate traces of ‘hidden or erased public memory’. Exploring the process of ‘counter-memorialization’ as a means of healing traumas of historical conflict, memory, and ecological disaster in Korea and Canada, the collaborative project will feature collaborative research, workshops, creative writing, residencies, and exhibitions. The first exhibition at Horagasinamu ArtPolygon, Gwangju will explore how the Anthropocene, global environmental crises, and past and future ecological catastrophes are mapped and commemorated through interdisciplinary site-specific research, examining how nature can be a witness to past tragedies. It will also challenge dominant cartographic practices by constructing counter-narratives for those whose histories have been denied recognition by capitalist violence, environmental catastrophe, and colonial structures.
