제주의 식생이 이동하는 다채로운 경로를 우리는 예측할 수 없다. 양숙현과 캣 오스틴은 기온과 고도의 영향에 따라 이주하는 식생에 대한 인간적 지표에서 벗어나, 중력에 반하여 아래에서 위로 순환하는 환경 속에 존재할 법한 통로(portal)을 상상해본다. 그 신비로운 통로는 한라산의 가시적으로 보이는 표면이 아니라 내부 깊숙한 곳에서 물질을, 즉 식생을 이동시키는 차원이다. 양숙현은 수직 이동을 통해 채굴한 한라산의 다양한 식생 이미지를 데이터로 변환하고 이를 수평적 시선으로 풀어내는 영상 작업을 제시한다. 캣 오스틴은 한라산의 보이지 않는 소리 공간을 찾아내어 필드 레코딩으로 담아낸 앰비언트 사운드(ambient sound)로 풀어낸다.

We cannot predict the diverse path through which Jeju’s plants move. Sookyun Yang and Kat Austen imagine the portal that may exist in an environment that circulates from bottom to top against gravity, away from human indicators of vegetation that migrate according to the effects of temperature or altitude. The mysterious passage is not a visible surface of Hallasan Mountain, but the dimension that moves the material, or vegetation, deep inside. Sookyun Yang presents video work that converts various nature images of Hallasan mountain mined through vertical movement into data and solves them with a horizontal gaze. Kat Austen finds the invisible sound space of Hallasan Mountain and releases it with ambient sound captured by field recording.
